১৯ মে ভাষা শহীদ দিবস

এই ঘটনার পর অসম সরকার বাংলা কে দাপ্তরিক ভাষা হিসেবে মেনে নিতে বাধ্য হয়। তাই ২১ শে ফেব্রুয়ারী আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস পালনের পাশাপাশি ১৯ শে মে ভারতের নানা প্রান্তে এগারো জন শহীদের আত্মবলিদানকে সম্মান জানানোর মধ্যে দিয়ে এই ভাষা আন্দোলন, ভাষার ইতিহাসে অবিস্মরণীয় হয়ে থাকবে।

Bengal Live ডেস্কঃ  ১৯৫২ সালে বাংলাদেশে বাংলা ভাষার মর্যাদা প্রতিষ্ঠায় যে আন্দোলন হয়েছিল তার নয় বছর পরে ১৯৬১ সালে অসমের ব্রহ্মপুত্র উপত্যকায়  বাংলা ভাষার মর্যাদা অক্ষুণ্ণ রাখতে প্রাণ হারিয়েছিলেন এগারো বাঙালি আন্দোলনকারী। অসমীয়া ভাষাই একমাত্র সরকারি ভাষা -সরকারের এই সিদ্ধান্তের প্রতিবাদে ১৯শে মে পুলিশের গুলিতে শহীদ হন পৃথিবীর একমাত্র ভাষা-শহীদ নারী কমলা ভট্টাচার্য।

অসমীয়া বাঙালিদের প্রতি অসমীয়া ভাষাকে চাপিয়ে দিতে ১৯৬০ সালের ১০ অক্টোবর তৎকালীন অসমের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী বিমলা প্রসাদ চলিহা অসমীয়া ভাষাকেই একমাত্র সরকারি ভাষা হিসেবে ঘোষণা করেন। এরপরেই বাঙালি অভিবাসীদের মধ্যে উদ্বেগ বাড়তে থাকে। এই ঘটনা ক্রমেই সহিংসতার রূপ নিলে উত্তেজিত অসমীয়ারা অভিবাসী বাঙালিদের ওপর আক্রমণ করে বসে। ভীত সন্ত্রস্ত হয়ে প্রায় পঞ্চাশ হাজার বাঙালি পশ্চিমবঙ্গে পালিয়ে আসেন। তবে উত্তর করিমগঞ্জ-এর বিধায়ক রণেন্দ্রমোহন দাস সরকারের এই সিদ্ধান্তের তীব্র বিরোধিতা করেছিলেন।

বাংলা কে সরকারি ভাষার স্বীকৃতির দাবিতে ১৯৬১ সালের ৫ ফেব্রুয়ারী কাছার গণ পরিষদ গঠিত হয়।
অসম সরকারের এই হঠকারী সিদ্ধান্তের বিরুদ্ধে ১৪ এপ্রিল তারিখে শিলচর, করিমগঞ্জ এবং হাইলাকান্দির মানুষেরা সংকল্প দিবস পালন করেন। কাছার গণ পরিষদের পক্ষ থেকে বরাক উপত্যকার মানুষদের মধ্যে মাতৃভাষার অধিকার নিয়ে চেতনা জাগরণের জন্য উপত্যকাজুড়ে সপ্তাহব্যাপী পদযাত্রা করা হয়। পদযাত্রা শেষে পরিষদের সভাপতি রথীন্দ্রনাথ সেন ঘোষণা করেছিলেন, যদি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের মধ্যে বাংলাকে সরকারী ভাষা হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা না হয় তবে ১৯ মে ব্যাপক হরতাল করবেন তারা।

১৮ মে অসম আন্দোলনের তিনজন নেতা নলিনীকান্ত দাস, রথীন্দ্রনাথ সেন ও বিধুভূষণ চৌধুরী(সাপ্তাহিক যুগশক্তির সম্পাদক) কে গ্রেপ্তার করে পুলিশ। বাংলা ভাষাকে সরকারি স্বীকৃতি না দেওয়ায় আন্দোলনকারীরা ১৯ মে শিলচর, করিমগঞ্জ ও হাইলাকান্দিতে হরতাল ও পিকেটিং শুরু করে। এদিন বিকেল ২:৩০ নাগাদ নয়জন সত্যাগ্রহীকে কাটিগোরা থেকে গ্রেপ্তার করে ট্রাকে করে নিয়ে যায় অসম রাইফেলস।

আন্দোলনকারীরা তাদের দলের লোকেদের গ্রেপ্তার হতে দেখে তীব্র প্রতিবাদ করতে থাকেন। অশনাক্ত এক ব্যক্তি ওই ট্রাকে আগুন ধরিয়ে দিলে সুরক্ষার দায়িত্বে থাকা প্যারামিলিটারি বাহিনী আন্দোলনকারীদের লক্ষ্য করে ১৭ রাউন্ড গুলি চালায়। পুলিশের নৃশংস গুলিতে ভাষা আন্দোলনরত অবস্থায় প্রাণ হারান কমলা ভট্টাচার্য,শচীন্দ্র পাল, বীরেন্দ্র সূত্রধর, কানাইলাল নিয়োগী, চন্ডিচরন সূত্রধর, সত্যেন্দ্র দেব, হীতেশ বিশ্বাস, কুমুদরঞ্জন দাস, তারিণী দেবনাথ, সুনীল সরকার এবং সুকুমার পুরকায়স্থ।এঁদের মধ্যে কমলা ভট্টাচার্য পৃথিবীর একমাত্র নারী ভাষা শহীদ যিনি মাত্র ষোলো বছর বয়সে ভাষার আন্দোলনে নিজের জীবন উৎসর্গ করেন।

এই ঘটনার পর অসম সরকার বাংলা কে দাপ্তরিক ভাষা হিসেবে মেনে নিতে বাধ্য হয়। তাই ২১ শে ফেব্রুয়ারী আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস পালনের পাশাপাশি ১৯ শে মে ভারতের নানা প্রান্তে এগারো জন শহীদের আত্মবলিদানকে সম্মান জানানোর মধ্যে দিয়ে এই ভাষা আন্দোলন, ভাষার ইতিহাসে অবিস্মরণীয় হয়ে থাকবে।
